…In the Middle Ages, the northwestern part of the county was called Asuwa Kita-gun and the southeastern part was called Asuwa Minami-gun, but in 1664 (Kanbun 4), the two were restored to their original names. When the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established in 1871 (Meiji 4), Asuwa Prefecture was temporarily established (between December 1871 and January 1873). In the merger of towns and villages after World War II, most of the former county areas were merged into Fukui City, and only Miyama Town remains today. …

From Echizen Province

...In 1870 (Meiji 3), Honpo Prefecture was established in the Tenryo and Yatsuchi territories, and the following year, Fukui, Maruoka, Ono, Katsuyama, Sabae, and Obama prefectures were established. In November of the same year, Sabae and Obama prefectures were established as Tsuruga Prefecture, and the rest as Fukui Prefecture, and in December, Fukui Prefecture was renamed Asuwa Prefecture. Fukui Prefecture was absorbed into Tsuruga Prefecture in 1873, and in 1876, the seven Echizen counties excluding Tsuruga County were incorporated into Ishikawa Prefecture, and Tsuruga County and the three Wakasa counties were incorporated into Shiga Prefecture, but in 1881, the eleven counties of Echizen and Wakasa were separated from Ishikawa and Shiga Prefectures to form Fukui Prefecture. ...

From Fukui Prefecture

In the same year, the five prefectures of Honpo, Fukui, Maruoka, Ono, and Katsuyama were united to form Fukui Prefecture (soon to be renamed Asuwa Prefecture), and Obama and Sabae prefectures merged to form Tsuruga Prefecture. In 1873, Tsuruga Prefecture merged with Asuwa Prefecture and took control of the area that is now Fukui Prefecture, but in 1876 it was divided into two, with Echizen, excluding Tsuruga County, being incorporated into Ishikawa Prefecture, and Tsuruga County and Wakasa into Shiga Prefecture. In 1881, it was separated from the two prefectures and re-established as Fukui Prefecture.
