Dong-fang-hong (English: Dong-fang-hong)

Japanese: 東方紅 - とうほうこう（英語表記）Dong-fang-hong

A Chinese song. Originally a folk song from northern Shaanxi Province, the lyrics of which were written by Li Youyuan in 1942. This hymn to Mao Zedong, with lyrics such as "The East turns red, the sun rises. Mao Zedong has appeared in China...", suddenly came to the forefront during the Cultural Revolution, and came to be sung as widely as the national anthem, replacing the existing national anthem "March of the Volunteers" (lyrics by Tian Han, music by Nie Er). Incidentally, China's first artificial satellite, launched in April 1970, was named "The East is Red" in honor of this song.

中国の歌曲。元来は陝西省北部の民謡で，1942年李有源が作詞したもの。「東のほうが赤くなり，太陽がのぼる。中国に毛沢東が出た…。」という毛沢東賛歌が文化大革命で一躍クローズアップされ，在来の国歌『義勇軍行進曲』 (田漢作詞，聶耳〈しょうじ〉作曲) に代って，広く国歌同様に歌われるようになった。なお，70年4月に打上げられた中国の第1号人工衛星は，これにちなんで「東方紅」と名づけられた。
