Daiichi Life Insurance Company [Mutual Company] - Daiichi Life Insurance Company
An independent life insurance company. It is the second largest in the industry after Nippon Life Insurance. In 1902, Yano Tsuneta (1865-1951), who retired as the first head of the Insurance Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, founded Dai-ichi Life Insurance. It is known as the first mutual life insurance company in Japan with a 100-year history. After World War I, the company's performance improved significantly, and it secured its position as one of the five major life insurance companies in the 1920s and the second largest in the industry in the 1930s. After the war, the company's head office building was requisitioned by GHQ, but it continued to expand its business smoothly. It focused on improving its ATMs (automated teller machines), and boasts the highest number of ATMs in the industry. In response to the revised Insurance Business Act of 1996 and the Financial System Reform Act of 1998, the company entered into a full business partnership with the Industrial Bank of Japan (now Mizuho Financial Group) in 1998. In 2000, the company formed a comprehensive business partnership with Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance (now Sompo Japan), and also with American Family Life Insurance, demonstrating its proactive management in response to changes in the business environment. Headquarters in Tokyo. Interim total assets as of September 2003 were 32,297.8 billion yen, and insurance premiums and other income for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 3,312.4 billion yen.
