Intensity of labour

It is the amount of labor expenditure per unit of labor time, and is also called the density or intensity of labor. While the length of labor time represents the external size of labor, labor intensity represents the inclusive size of labor. Each country and each production sector has a certain standard labor intensity depending on its stage of development. Any increase in labor intensity beyond that results in labor intensification. Labor intensity is increased by increasing the operating speed of machines and expanding the scope of machine operation or supervision. This process increases the amount of labor expenditure and the degree of tension, and is often accompanied by piecework wages and stimulation or control of labor through management organizations. The change in labor intensity is indirectly measured by the production intensity index (production index ÷ employment index), as well as the rate of industrial accidents and accumulation of fatigue.

単位労働時間内の労働支出量のことで、労働の密度または集約度ともいう。労働時間の長さが労働の外延的な大きさを表すのに対し、労働強度は労働の内包的な大きさを表す。各国および各生産部門には、その発展段階によって一定の標準的な労働強度が存在する。それ以上に労働強度が増大させられると労働強化になる。労働強度は、機械の運転速度の増大、機械の操作もしくは監視範囲の拡大によって高められる。この過程は、労働の支出量や緊張度を高めることから、出来高払賃金や管理組織による労働の刺激もしくは統制を伴うことがしばしばである。労働強度の推移は、生産強度指数（生産指数÷雇用指数）をはじめ労働災害率、疲労の蓄積などから間接的に計測される。
