A port city on the east coast of Norfolk, eastern England, United Kingdom. Population 80,820 (1981). Yarmouth means "mouth of the River Yare", and the city is also called simply Yarmouth. Located on a narrow sandbar between the North Sea and Bredon Bay, the city has developed as a fishing port, mainly for herring, and as a coastal resort. In addition to electrical and textile industries, the city is also active in food processing, including smoked herring. The old town was walled in 1260, and narrow streets called the Rows remain, as well as St. Nicholas Church, founded in 1101, and the Toll House, one of the oldest municipal buildings in England.
