Originally, it was a long dress made of brightly colored and printed cotton fabric, with an open waistline. It originated from clothes given to native Hawaiian women by missionaries, but its prototype was a gown-like dress with a yoke on the chest called Mother Hubbard, worn in the mainland United States from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. When the yoke was omitted (called muumuu in Hawaiian), it came to be called this. It was worn by Hawaiian women as home wear and casual wear, but gradually the designs became more diverse, and dressy versions with a cut-out waistline and cinched waistline are worn as semi-formal wear. In Japan, it became popular from the early 1960s, and is worn as summer home wear and resort wear.
