...Asuke, located at the confluence of the Asuke River and the Tomoe River, was the center of the area. During the Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods, the Asuke clan, based at Iimoriyama Castle, ruled the area, and during the Sengoku period, the Suzuki clan, who built Mayumiyama Castle, ruled the area. At the end of the Sengoku period, a small castle town had formed. In the early modern period, the area was a key transportation point, where the Iida Highway, which connected Nagoya and Iida, and the Asuke Highway, which led to Okazaki, branched off, and it flourished as a transit market for salt and miscellaneous goods, and as a post town. The salt known as Asuke salt was produced in salt fields near the mouth of the Yahagi River, prepared by salt wholesalers in Asuke, and then sent to the Shinshu Ina area. ...
