Asuke Highway

...Asuke, located at the confluence of the Asuke River and the Tomoe River, was the center of the area. During the Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods, the Asuke clan, based at Iimoriyama Castle, ruled the area, and during the Sengoku period, the Suzuki clan, who built Mayumiyama Castle, ruled the area. At the end of the Sengoku period, a small castle town had formed. In the early modern period, the area was a key transportation point, where the Iida Highway, which connected Nagoya and Iida, and the Asuke Highway, which led to Okazaki, branched off, and it flourished as a transit market for salt and miscellaneous goods, and as a post town. The salt known as Asuke salt was produced in salt fields near the mouth of the Yahagi River, prepared by salt wholesalers in Asuke, and then sent to the Shinshu Ina area. ...

…足助川と巴川の合流点にある足助が中心地で，鎌倉～南北朝期には飯盛山城に拠った足助氏が，戦国期には真弓山城を築いた鈴木氏が支配し，戦国末期には小城下町が形成されていた。近世は名古屋と飯田を結ぶ飯田街道と岡崎に至る足助街道の分岐点にあたる交通の要地で，塩と雑貨の中継市場として，また宿場町として栄えた。足助塩として知られる塩は矢作（やはぎ）川河口近くの塩田で生産され，足助の塩問屋で調製された後，信州伊那方面に送られた。…
