French composer. After studying composition under Milhaud at the Paris Conservatory from 1953 to 1961, he studied under Boulez at the Basel Conservatory from 1961 to 1962. He attracted attention with his work Equibalance for 18 instruments, which premiered under the direction of Boulez at the Darmstadt International Summer School of Contemporary Music in 1963. This work is post-Webern in style, but he later showed a strong interest in Eastern music and produced works in that same vein. Works that show this unique style include Shanti, which he composed at the WDR Electronic Music Studio in Cologne from 1972 to 1973, and the tape work The Path of Music, which lasts 4 hours and 20 minutes and was produced at the NHK Electronic Music Studio during his stay in Tokyo in 1975.
