Modern Western words translated as "mysticism," such as the English word mysticism, are said to originate from the Greek word myein, which means "to close (the eyes or mouth)." This already suggests an experience that does not allow for normal expression, but mysticism refers to the position in which humans attempt to directly experience the absolute, thought to be God, the highest reality, or the ultimate basis of the universe, within themselves as they are, and has appeared widely in the history of religion with various variations.
