Synchronized Swimming

Japanese: シンクロナイズドスイミング
Synchronized Swimming
A type of water sport. Participants swim to musical accompaniment and compete on the accuracy of technique and the beauty of expression. It originated in Europe and developed as a show before becoming a competitive sport in the United States in 1945. It was introduced to Japan in 1954 by a US team that came to entertain the occupying forces. There are three events: solo (solo), duet (2 people), and team (4-8 people). In 1995, the rules were revised to determine rankings based on the total points of technical routine and free routine, instead of figures (regulations) and routine (free performance). It has been an official Olympic event since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, but only team (8 people) was held at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Since the first World Championships in 1973, the United States, Canada, and Japan were the world's top three, but since 1997, Russia, France, China, and others have risen to prominence. From the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Japan won two silver and four bronze medals in duets, and won bronze medals in team competitions at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2004 Athens Olympics.
