A leading publisher of 20th century French literature. Its founder, Gaston Gallimard (1881-1975), founded the literary magazine NRF together with André Gide in 1908, but was dissatisfied with magazine-based publishing and established Librairie Gallimard in 1919 (renamed Editions Gallimard in 1961). In addition to Gide, Gallimard published works by Proust, Sartre, Camus, Beauvoir, Saint-Exupéry, Modiano, Le Clezio, and others. It is also known for the world literature series Pleiade (first published in 1933) and the mystery novel series Serie Noir (first published in 1945), which contains 2,500 titles. In 1971, Gallimard broke with Hachette, with whom it had maintained a distribution partnership for 32 years, and established its own distribution company, CDE Sodis. He also devoted himself to pocket books such as folio series and children's literature. The management of the publishing house was passed on to his son Claude and then to his grandson Christian, and in 1990 the family business faced a crisis when outside investors came into the business, but he ultimately maintained editorial freedom. 創立者ガストン・ガリマールGaston Gallimard(1881―1975)は、1908年アンドレ・ジッドとともに文学雑誌『NRF(エヌエルエフ)』を創刊したが、雑誌主体の出版に飽き足らず、1919年ガリマール社Librairie Gallimard(1961年にEditions Gallimardと改称)をおこした。
