Waterford - Waterford

It is the capital of the county of the same name in the southern part of the Republic of Ireland, and a special city. It is located on the right bank of the lower stream of the River Suir, a tributary of the River Barrow. It has a population of 44,564 (2002 census preliminary figure). It is a river port city on St. George's Channel, and is one of the most important cities in Ireland, along with Dublin, Wexford, and Cork. During the Tudor period in the 16th century, it became the second largest city after Dublin due to trade with Spain. Along with Rosslare, the port of Wexford, it exports butter, cheese, bacon, ham, livestock, and crystal glass to Fishguard and Newport in England. It has been famous for its glass industry since the 18th century. It is an old town inhabited by Danes since before the 12th century, and was chartered by King John in 1206 and occupied by Cromwell in 1649. It has a tower from the early 11th century and a cathedral built in the 18th century.

アイルランド共和国南部にある同名県の県都で特別市。バロー川の支流シュアー川の下流右岸に位置する。人口4万4564（2002国勢調査速報値）。セント・ジョージ海峡に臨む河港都市で、アイルランドではダブリン、ウェックスフォード、コークと並ぶ重要な都市。16世紀のチューダー朝時代には、スペイン貿易によってダブリンに次ぐ都市となった。ウェックスフォードの外港ロスレア港とともに、港からバター、チーズ、ベーコン、ハム、家畜、クリスタル・グラスなどを、イギリスのフィッシュガード、ニューポートへ向けて輸出している。ガラス工業は18世紀以来有名。12世紀以前からデーン人が居住した古い町で、1206年ジョン王から特許状を受け、1649年クロムウェルが占領した。11世紀初頭の塔や18世紀創建の大聖堂などが残る。
