Protestant pastor and theologian. Born in Ayabe, Kyoto Prefecture. While studying law at Tokyo Imperial University, he was baptized by Uemura Masahisa at Fujimicho Church. He dropped out of university and entered Tokyo Theological Seminary, and after graduating he became a professor at Tokyo Theological Seminary after working as a pastor in various places. After returning to Japan from a study abroad in England, he established Toyama Church (now Shinanocho Church) in Kashiwagi, Tokyo, and developed it into one of Japan's leading churches through his unique theological preaching. After Uemura's death, he served as the principal of Tokyo Theological Seminary and vice principal of Japan Theological Seminary, but died of physical and mental fatigue. He was a typical second-generation Christian following in the footsteps of Uemura and others, and his life was a constant struggle with the problem of the ego. His evangelical Christianity, which places special emphasis on the gospel of redemption through grace, is highly regarded for bringing theological awakening and direction to Japan in the early Showa period. His main work is "Evangelical Christianity."
