Ashiwake Boat

Japanese: 排蘆小船 - あしわけおぶね

Motoori Norinaga's book on waka poetry. The year of its creation is unknown, but it is believed to have been written when Norinaga was studying in Kyoto (aged 22-26). It is his first work on waka poetry. It discusses various issues related to waka poetry in a dialogue format, but it is an innovative work of waka poetry in that it considers the essence of waka poetry to be the product of a mind free from both politics and morality, in other words, it places the utmost importance on the autonomy of literature. Norinaga would later further deepen and refine this idea in Isonokami no Sasamegoto (Private Messages from Isonokami) (1763). [Sasaki Yukitsuna]

本居宣長の歌論書。成立年は不詳だが，宣長の京都遊学時代(22～26歳)に成ったかとされる。歌論の処女作である。問答体で和歌に関する諸問題を論じているが，歌の本質を，政治からも修身からも自由な心の所産とした，つまり，文芸の自律性を最重視した点で革新的な歌論であった。のちに，宣長は，《石上私淑言（いそのかみのささめごと）》(1763)でこの考えをさらに深化精密化してゆく。【佐佐木幸綱】
