This is an architectural style reminiscent of a storehouse, in which horizontal timbers with triangular cross sections are stacked in a cage pattern to form the walls. The corners of the horizontal timbers form the exterior walls, and the flat parts form the interior walls, so the ends of the walls have a sawtooth shape. In Japan, this style was built in various places as storehouses for provincial capitals and temples from the Nara period to the early Heian period, but there are few examples since then. Remains from the Nara period include the Shosoin Treasure House, the Todaiji Temple Honbo Sutra Storehouse, and the Treasure House and Sutra Storehouse of Toshodaiji Temple.
