...Subways in major cities have been actively constructed since 1960, and many of them cross rivers and canals, and are constructed using air pressure shields and other construction methods. The first immersed tunnel was the Ajigawa River Underwater Road Tunnel in Osaka City, built in 1944, but the first full-scale tunnel was the Haneda Tunnel on the Keiyo Line of the Japanese National Railways (now JR), which was completed in 1972 and has a total length of 5,980 m. The tunnels under the Tama River (480 m) and the Keihin Canal (328 m) were constructed using the immersed tunnel method, and the Morigasaki Canal (866 m) was constructed using a slurry pressure shield. Other tunnels include the Tokyo Port Tunnel (1,325 m), Kawasaki Port Undersea Tunnel (1,160 m), and Tokyo No. 2 Sea Route Undersea Tunnel (1,084 m), as well as the Daiba Tunnel on the Keiyo Line (4,756 m). A large-scale undersea tunnel, the Seikan Tunnel (53.85 km long, 23.3 km undersea), was constructed using normal construction methods in conjunction with chemical grouting and opened in 1988. ...
