A bird of the Heronidae family in the order Ciconiiformes. Total length is about 75 cm. It is slightly larger than the black-crowned night heron, with yellowish-brown feathers and black stripes and irregular patterns all over its body. It is distributed throughout Eurasia and Africa, and migrates to Japan as a winter bird, but in small numbers. It lives in large reed beds. During the day, it hides among the reeds, and roams around in the evening and at night, preying on fish, frogs, large insects, etc. If a person approaches during the day, it points its beak up, stretches its neck, and stays still in an upright position. In this way, the pattern on its body blends in with the surrounding reeds, allowing it to avoid detection. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
