... The name Namahage means that they punish lazy people who get fire calluses by peeling off the "namomi" ("roasting") calluses that form around a fireplace. In the Yuri district of Akita Prefecture, they are called "namomihagi," and in Akita City they are called "yamahage." In Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, there is a similar event called "amamehagi." It is said that the Namahage of the Oga Peninsula is an event held at Akagami Shrine Goshado that has spread throughout the peninsula, but since 1964 Oga City has promoted it as a tourist attraction, and it is also held at the Sedo Festival of Kitaura Shinzan Shrine from February 13th to 15th. ...
