A Japanese national shipping company that operated the China coastal routes. After the First Sino-Japanese War, in order to avoid fierce competition among Japanese shipping companies that had expanded into the Yangtze River route, the company was founded in March 1907 at the invitation of the government by merging and integrating two companies, Daito Kisen and Konan Kisen, with the Yangtze River route divisions of Osaka Shosen and Nippon Yusen. The new company inherited the routes of the four companies, was headquartered in Tokyo, and Ishiwata Kuninojo, a communications bureaucrat, was appointed as its first president. With capital of 8.1 million yen, it was the fourth largest company in the shipping industry after Nippon Yusen, Osaka Shosen, and Toyo Kisen.
