...In addition, some places start farming after seeing the blooming of magnolias and cherry blossoms. In the Aizu Nosho (1684), a representative local agricultural book from the early modern period, there are examples of the "Tanemakizakura" that blooms at the seed-sowing festival and the "Saotomebana" that blooms at the rice-planting festival being called the "May maiden flower," and it is also mentioned that wisteria flowers are used to sow sesame seeds. In some areas, the calls of wild birds are used as a guide for farming, such as "When the cuckoo sings, sow millet, and when the tot (Tsutsuri) comes, sow beans," and the barn owl is called the "hemp-sowing bird." In some places, the movement of stars such as the Pleiades is used as a guide for the sowing and fishing seasons of wheat and buckwheat.
