German author. Born in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland). He showed early talent as a poet, but because of his anti-romantic, liberal political views, he was unable to obtain his desired professorship and was also restricted in his activities as a literary journalist. In addition to the comedy The Political Birthplace (1843) and the social novel Engelchen (1851), he also wrote incisive literary theory and literary history based on his lecture tours, and his History of German Journalism (1845) is a valuable pioneering work.

ドイツの作家。シュテッティン(現，ポーランドのシュチェチン)の生れ。早くから詩才を発揮したが，反ロマン主義的自由主義的な政治思想のため，念願の教授職にも就くことができず，文芸ジャーナリストとしての活動にも制限を加えられた。喜劇《政治の産室》(1843)，社会小説《エンゲルヒェン》(1851)の作品のほかに，講演旅行をもとにした鋭利な文学論や文学史の著作があり，《ドイツ･ジャーナリズムの歴史》(1845)も貴重な先駆的な労作である。
