1816‐72 German author. Born in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland). He showed early talent as a poet, but because of his anti-romantic, liberal political views, he was unable to obtain his desired professorship and was also restricted in his activities as a literary journalist. In addition to the comedy The Political Birthplace (1843) and the social novel Engelchen (1851), he also wrote incisive literary theory and literary history based on his lecture tours, and his History of German Journalism (1845) is a valuable pioneering work.
