Following his father's wishes, he studied law at the University of Paris and qualified as a lawyer at the age of 22. However, unable to give up his love for literature, he worked as a theater clerk and stockbroker while pursuing a career as a writer. He also wrote play and operetta scripts, but had a strong curiosity about scientific discoveries and inventions, and made acquaintances with many explorers and geographers.
