Asama Highlands

Japanese:
Asama Highlands

This plateau extends over the northern and southern foothills of Mt. Asama, which lies on the border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures. It is made up of soil made up of thick deposits of eruption material from the Asama volcano, which extends between 900 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The slope is gentle at the bottom, but as the land gets higher it becomes steeper, typical of stratovolcanoes. From the southeast to the southern foot, below 1,200 meters there is a gentle plateau-like slope, but on the northern foot on the Gunma side there is a high plain at 1,400 meters. As it is a deposit of new volcanic material, it is more valuable as a tourist spot or a vacation home destination than for agricultural use. The east and west are mountainous areas and there are no plateaus. The center of the plateau is on the south side, and taking advantage of its magnificent scenery, cool summer temperatures, volcanic topography and other natural resources, there are resorts such as villas centered around Karuizawa, Shiraitonotaki Falls, Kose, Hoshino and Shiotsubo Onsen, attracting over 7 million tourists per year. The northern foot of the plateau is called Kitakaruizawa and includes Onioshidashi and Asama Ranch. The plateau's plants are mainly larch and red pine, and the southern foot is home to many wild birds and many historical sites from the early modern Nakasendo road.
