Year of death: Tenroku 3.11.1 (972.12.9) Year of birth: 2nd year of the Enshu era (924) A nobleman in the mid-Heian period. He was called Ichijo Regent. His posthumous name was Kentoku-ko. He was the eldest son of the Minister of the Right, Michisuke, and Fujiwara no Tsunekuni's daughter, Moriko. He sided with his uncle, Michitada, who was considered the mastermind behind the Anwa Incident (969), and was promoted from Gon Dainagon to Dainagon shortly thereafter. When Emperor En'yu took the throne in place of Emperor Reizei (both were cousins of Koretada), Prince Reizei's son, Prince Michisada (later Emperor Kazan), born to his daughter, became the Crown Prince. In Tenroku 1 (970), he became Minister of the Right, and four months later, when his uncle, Fujiwara no Saneyori, passed away, he became Regent. In the second year, he became Daijo-daijin (Grand Minister of State with the rank of Shonii). He served as Regent for a year and a half before dying of illness. His remains were buried in the grounds of Tenan-ji Temple outside Saikyo (the precursor to Hokongo-in Temple in Futagaoka, Ukyo Ward). It is said that he died due to the ghost of Fujiwara no Asanai, who had once competed for the position of councilor and lost. He was good at waka poetry, and wrote the "Ichijo Sessho Goshu". His poem "A person who should be called pitiful should be thought of as a waste of one's life" was included in the Hyakunin Isshu. He was beautiful, loved extravagant things, and was said to have been lecherous (as can be seen from his poem). He built a mansion called Momozono to the north of the Daidairi, which was passed down to his grandson and adopted son Gyōnari and became Sesonji Temple.
