Mount Asakuma - Mount Asakuma

Japanese: 朝熊ヶ岳 - あさまがたけ

Located in the eastern part of Ise City, Mie Prefecture, near the border with Toba City, this mountain is made of the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata. It is also called Mt. Asakuma. It has a northern and southern peak, and although the northern peak is not high at 555 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak on the Shima Peninsula. From the summit, you can see Toba Bay and the opposite shore of Ise Bay. The Ise-Shima Skyline runs through the mountain, and there is also the 18 Provinces Observatory, which offers a panoramic view of the 18 provinces of the Tokai region, making it one of the famous spots in Ise-Shima National Park. On the southern peak is Kongosho-ji Temple, which is said to be the temple of Kobo Daishi's revival, and within the grounds are the Asakuma sutra mounds. It is said that the place name originated from the fact that during Kobo Daishi's training, a bear appeared in the morning and Kokuzo Bosatsu appeared in the evening.

Kongoshoji Temple
This temple is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Kinmei (510-571) and is part of the Nanzenji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It was once known as the "inner sanctuary of the shrine" as it was believed to protect the Ise Shrine from evil spirits. 三重県伊勢市(いせし)の東部、鳥羽(とば)市との境近くにある秩父中・古生層からなる山。朝熊山ともいう。北峰と南峰があり、北峰は標高555メートルで高くはないが、志摩半島の最高峰。山頂からは鳥羽湾をはじめ伊勢湾の対岸まで望むことができる。伊勢志摩スカイラインが通じ、東海十八州を一望に収めるという十八州展望台などもあって、伊勢志摩国立公園内の名所の一つとなっている。南峰に弘法(こうぼう)大師の中興になるという朝熊山金剛證寺(こんごうしょうじ)があり、境内に朝熊山経塚群がある。地名のおこりは、弘法大師が修行中、朝に熊(くま)が、夕に虚空蔵菩薩(こくうぞうぼさつ)が現れたことによると伝えられる。
