Saint Martin (Island) (English spelling)

It is one of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, and lies east of Puerto Rico. It has a population of about 14,000. Since 1648, the northern half of the island (54 km2) has been French territory, and the southern half (St. Maarten, 41 km2) has been Dutch territory. It was discovered by Columbus in 1493. Salt has been produced there since the 17th century, but in recent years, the Dutch part in particular has been attracting attention as a tourist destination.
