A spring-planted bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). Native to Mexico and Guatemala. Its Japanese name is Tsubamezuisen because the flowers resemble swallows. The leaves are linear and about 20 cm long. In May and June, it produces deep scarlet flowers on flower stalks about 20 cm high. Of the six tepals, the two on the left and right are particularly long and slender and curved. It was classified as the same genus as Amaryllis, but it is distinguished by its distinct lip petal, the fact that there is one flower per stalk, and the sheath-shaped base of the spathe. It is planted in early spring. It is sensitive to the cold, so it is best to dig up the bulbs and store them.

ヒガンバナ科（APG分類：ヒガンバナ科）の春植え球根草。メキシコ、グアテマラ原産。花の姿がツバメに似ることから和名ツバメズイセンともいう。葉は線形で、長さ約20センチメートル。5～6月、高さ約20センチメートルの花茎に濃緋紅(ひこう)色の花をつける。6枚の花被片(かひへん)のうち左右の2枚は、とくに細長く湾曲している。アマリリス属と同属にされていたが、唇弁がはっきりしていて1茎1花であること、仏炎包の基部が鞘(さや)状になっていることで区別された。植え付けは春先に行う。寒さに弱いので、球根は掘り上げて貯蔵するとよい。
