A seaweed of the Laminaria family of the Phaeophyceae class, with a large spherical air vesicle up to 15 cm in diameter at the end of a long, cylindrical, string-like stem that can reach a length of 25 to 35 m, and numerous long, kelp-like leaves that reach several meters in length at the top of the vesicle. It is distributed from the Pacific coast of the United States to the Aleut Islands. It grows below the low tide line and has a shape similar to that of young kelps, but as it grows, the stem grows long and the boundary between the leaves and the stem specially differentiates to become an air vesicle, which allows the body to rise directly into the sea. Various gases are mixed in the air vesicle, which can reach a volume of 3 liters and is known to contain carbon monoxide. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
