A perennial plant of the Araceae family cultivated in the tropics for its edible tubers and leaves. Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America and the West Indies, it is also called American taro. The leaves (blades) are arrowhead-shaped, acute triangles about 70 cm long, and long stalks (petioles) grow from the base, reaching a height of about 2 m. The stems do not grow long, but remain underground and swell to become tubers, with about 10 baby tubers growing around them. The baby tubers are 15 to 25 cm long. Because they resemble taro, they are sometimes called cocoyams without distinguishing between the two. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
