[Birth] Jiading 16 (1223) [Died] Tokusuke 1 (1275) Chinese statesman, scholar, and man of letters in the early Yuan Dynasty. Born in Lingchuan, Zezhou (Jincheng County, Shanxi Province). Court name: Bochang. As his family was poor, he worked during the day and devoted himself to reading at night. He was summoned and recognized by Kublai Khan (the First Emperor), and was appointed as a Hanlin Attendant Reader when Kublai Khan ascended to the throne. He went to the Southern Song Dynasty as an envoy and was imprisoned by Jia Sidao for 15 years. He was forced to return due to pressure from the Yuan army, but died the following year in 1275. His posthumous name was Wenzhong. He had a deep knowledge of the Zhouyi (→Book of Changes) and the Spring and Autumn Annals, and was skilled in poetry and prose, and was praised as highly as his teacher, Yuan Haowen. His works include the Continued Book of the Later Han, the Spring and Autumn Annals, and the poetry and prose collection Lingchuanshu.
