Spanish neuroanatomist and histologist. He studied medicine at the University of Zaragoza, where he began research in anatomy and histology, becoming a professor in 1877. He subsequently served as professor at the Universities of Valencia, Barcelona, and Madrid, and established the so-called Spanish school of histology. He was impressed by the Golgi method, a method of staining brain tissue developed by the Italian C. Golgi, and while using this method to study the cerebellum of birds and mammals, he proposed the theory that the interaction between nerve cells is not anastomosis as Golgi and others had said, but rather contact, and that nerves are made up of independent cells (neurons = nerve units) that are in contact with each other.

スペインの神経解剖組織学者。サラゴサ大学で医学を学び，同大学で解剖学･組織学の研究を始め，1877年には教授となった。その後，バレンシア大学，バルセロナ大学，マドリード大学の教授を歴任し，組織学のいわゆるスペイン学派をつくりあげた。彼は，イタリアのC.ゴルジが開発した脳組織の染色法，いわゆるゴルジ法に感動し，それを用いて鳥と哺乳類の小脳の研究を進めているうちに，神経細胞間の連絡の相互作用は，ゴルジらによっていわれていたような吻合（ふんごう）ではなく，接触であり，神経は，互いに接触している独立した細胞(ニューロン＝神経単位)によって成立しているという説を提唱した。
