Hokoji Temple

Japanese:
Hokoji Temple
It stands alongside Toyokuni Shrine in Chayamachi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. It is a Tendai sect temple founded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It was completed at the end of the 16th century. A wooden statue of the Great Buddha, measuring 6 meters, was enshrined in the Great Buddha Hall, which demonstrated Hideyoshi's power, but it was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1595. His son Hideyori rebuilt it in 1614, but because the inscription on the temple bell read "Peace and prosperity of the nation," Tokugawa Ieyasu pursued him, which led to the Siege of Osaka. The Great Buddha rebuilt by Hideyori was a gilt bronze Buddha, but it was destroyed in an earthquake in 1662 and rebuilt with wood. However, it was also destroyed in a fire caused by a lightning strike on the Great Buddha Hall in 1798. After that, a half-bust statue (wooden statue) was enshrined in a temporary hall, but it was destroyed in a fire in 1973 along with the hall. Toyokuni Shrine was rebuilt in 1880 within the temple grounds. There is a mound of ears in front of the gate.
