Maurice Arthus

French physiologist. He studied in Paris and became professor of physiology at the University of Lausanne in 1907. In an animal experiment he reported in 1903, he found that when horse serum was reinjected intradermally into rabbits that had been pretreated with horse serum, redness, swelling, and even necrosis occurred at the site of the injection. This reaction was later named the "Arthus reaction" (allergy), and the name has remained in the history of allergy research. [Akimoto Toshio]

フランスの生理学者。パリで学び，1907年以来ローザンヌ大学生理学教授となる。彼が1903年に報告した動物実験によって，ウマ血清で前処置されたウサギの皮内にウマ血清を再注射すると，その個所に発赤，腫張，さらには壊死などの病変が生ずることが明らかにされたが，この反応はのちに〈アルチュス反応〉(アレルギー)と名付けられ，アレルギー研究史上にその名が残された。【秋元寿恵夫】
