A state in central Mexico. With an area of 4,941 km2, it is the second smallest state after Tlaxcala. Its population is 1,442,587 (1995). Its capital is Cuernavaca. It spreads across the southern foot of Mount Ajusco in the Neovolcanica Mountains, with little flat land. Its altitude is 800-5,400 m. The climate varies greatly depending on the altitude, with the northern part at the foot of Mount Ajusco and the Popocatepetl volcanoes being cold, and the southern part being tropical and humid, while the central part is relatively warm. Annual precipitation is less than 1,000 mm. The main industry is agriculture in the tributaries of the Balsas River, with rice, corn, coffee, sugar cane, and fruit being the main agricultural products.
