An old city in northern Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. Farming is centered on field crops in the Nasunohara area, with tobacco leaf cultivation and dairy farming also thriving. Forestry is practiced in the mountainous area in the northwest. The center of the city is the village in front of Kuroiso Station on the Tohoku Main Line, which is also served by the Tohoku Shinkansen and National Route 4, and has developed as the gateway to the Nasu Onsen hot spring resort. In January 2005, it merged with Nishinasuno Town and Shiobara Town in Nasu County to become a city, Nasu-Shiobara City. 343.12 km2 . Population: 59,650 (2003). 栃木県北部の旧市。1970年市制。那須野原一帯で畑作中心の農業を営み,葉タバコ栽培,酪農が盛ん。北西部の山地では林業が行われる。中心は東北本線黒磯駅の駅前集落で,東北新幹線,国道4号線も通じ,那須温泉郷の玄関口として発展してきた。2005年1月那須郡西那須野町,塩原町と合併し市制,那須塩原市となる。343.12km2。5万9650人(2003)。
