A samurai family that was based in Ata County, Satsuma Province, and exerted its influence throughout the southern Satsuma region from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. A branch of the Satsuma Taira clan. In 1138 (Hōen 4), Taira Tadakage, governor of Ata County, donated his private land, Ichimagari Arauchi in Mutakamiura, in the county, to the Kannon-ji temple in the county. As head of Hisayoshi, he boasted of his wealth, and around 1150 (Kyuan 6), he called himself Satsuma Gonshu, and as the head of the Satsuma Taira clan, his military influence extended to Osumi. It is said that in 1154 (Kyuju 1), he married Minamoto Tametomo, who wielded power in Chinzei. Around 1156 (Hōgen 1), he and his younger brother Tadanaga were accused of seizing the possessions of the lord of the manor, and in 1159 (Heiji 1), they were pardoned by the emperor and fled to Takkai (Iwo) Island.
