Nagazane Fujiwara - Nagazane Fujiwara

Japanese:
Nagazane Fujiwara - Nagazane Fujiwara
Year of death: 19th August 1133 (19th September 1133)
Year of birth: 1075
A nobleman in the late Heian period. Son of Shuri-no-daifu Fujiwara Akisue and the daughter of Dazai-no-daini Fujiwara Tsunehira. He was ennobled at the age of 11. He served as provincial governor of Inaba, Owari, Iyo, Harima, and other areas for 35 years, and in 1122 he was promoted to Junior Third Rank, Shuri-no-daifu, Dazai-no-daini, and in 1130 he was promoted to Senior Third Rank Provincial Chunagon. In his later years he became Dazai-no-gon-sui (the actual duties were the same as those of Daini), and was called Nijo no Sui. As his father was a close vassal of the retired emperor Shirakawa, Nagazane also enjoyed the emperor's patronage, and became the innoshi of the emperor in his early teens, playing an active role as a close vassal just like his father. From 1108, Nagazane's Oimikado Marikoji Palace was the Shirakawa-in palace for about six years. He was deeply involved in the funeral of Emperor Shirakawa in 1129, and afterwards performed Buddhist rites for the emperor for a year. He was trusted by the retired Emperor Toba and was appointed as the head priest of the same temple, but his promotion in rank was remarkable, and he attracted public attention when he was appointed as Gon Chunagon in the 5th year of the Taiji era. His daughter Tokuko (Bifukumon'in) gained the favor of the retired Emperor Toba and gave birth to Emperor Konoe. He was also active in the poetry world centered around his father Akisue, and had 20 poems included in imperial anthologies such as the Kinyoshu. However, the study of poetry was passed down to his younger brother Akisuke. He seems to have been a man known for his flashy and eye-catching behavior, due to the wealth he had accumulated over his many years as a jutaku. <References> Kono Fusao, Studies in the Political History of the Late Heian Period
