Japanese: 家族法 - かぞくほう

The total set of laws that regulate the daily relationships of families and relatives. It is also called status law, but this term is not used much these days due to its feudal overtones. The main laws are the Civil Code's family law and inheritance law. Since inheritance law deals with the transfer of property, it is sometimes included in property law and excluded from family law. Family law under Japan's old constitution was based on the family system, and feudal and status discrimination was prominent. The current constitution is based on the principles of individual dignity and essential equality of the sexes (Article 24), and the Civil Code's family law and inheritance law have been completely revised, with equal rights for husband and wife being recognized.

家族および親族の生活関係を規律する法規の全体。身分法ともいうが，封建的ニュアンスが伴うので近ごろあまり用いられない。民法の親族法，相続法が主要なもの。相続法は財産の移動に関するから財産法に含め，家族法から除外することもある。日本の旧憲法下の家族法は家制度を前提とし，封建的・身分的差別が著しかった。現行憲法は個人の尊厳と両性の本質的平等（24条）を原則とし，民法の親族法，相続法は全面的に改正され，夫婦同権などが認められた。
