It is the capital of Tay Ninh Province (population 965,000 in 1999) in southern Vietnam. It is located 90 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, on the left bank of the Vam Co Dong River. It has a population of 32,881 (1989). National Route 22 passes through the city. It is the headquarters of the Cao Dai sect, a new religion founded in 1920, and has a magnificent building with the "eye" as its sacred object. There is also a Brahman temple on the top of nearby Nui Baden Mountain. There are many rubber plantations in the surrounding area. Due to its proximity to Cambodia, it became a base for anti-Buddhist movements from the late 19th century onwards, and was also a stronghold of the National Liberation Front during the Vietnam War.
