A genus of woody climbing plants in the Menispermaceae family. Bariella comes from the Portuguese word pareira. The leaves are kidney-shaped to ovate with long petioles. Panicles grow from the leaf axils, either singly or in some species in clusters. The flowers are unisexual and dioecious. They have 6-18 sepals, 6 petals, 3-6 stamens in male flowers and 6 pistils in female flowers. The fruit is an elliptical drupe. About eight species, including C. tomentosum , C. platyphyllum , and C. cardicans , are distributed in tropical America. In countries such as Panama, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, an arrow poison called curare is extracted from the bark and roots of these species.
