Pedro de Alvarado

1485‐1541
Spanish conquistador. He participated in Juan de Grijalva's second Mexican expedition in 1518. In 1520, he joined H. Cortes' Mexican expedition and served as his right-hand man, but he committed a massacre of Indians that led to the Sad Night (Noche Triste). After the conquest of Mexico, he was appointed inspector-general and governor of Guatemala in 1523, and founded Guatemala City the following year. He later attempted an expedition to Peru, but abandoned it midway and went to put down the Indian rebellion that broke out in New Galicia, known as the Micheton War, where he was killed in battle.

スペイン人コンキスタドール。1518年フアン･デ･グリハルバによる第2次メキシコ遠征に参加。20年H.コルテスのメキシコ遠征に加わり，その右腕として活躍するが，〈悲しき夜(ノーチェ･トリステ)〉の発端となるインディオの大虐殺を行った。メキシコ征服後，23年グアテマラ総監兼総督に任命され，翌年グアテマラ市を建設。のち，ペルーへの遠征を企てるが途中で放棄し，ヌエバ･ガリシアで勃発したインディオの反乱，いわゆるミシュトン戦争の鎮圧に向かい戦死した。
