Kakizaki Hakyo

Japanese: 蠣崎波響 - かきざき・はきょう
Kakizaki Hakyo
Year of death: 22 June 1826 (26 July 1826)
Year of birth: May 26, 1764 (June 25, 1764)
A painter of the mid-to-late Edo period. His given name was Hirotoshi, his pen name was Seiyu, and his other name was Kyou. He was the fifth son of Matsumae Sukehiro, the 12th lord of the Matsumae domain in Ezo (Hokkaido). He became the heir to the Kakizaki family. He went to Edo at about the age of 10 and studied Nanpin-style painting under Takebe Ryodai, and later So Shiseki. In 1783 (Tenmei 3), at the age of 20, he studied under Ohara Donkyo, who came to Matsumae. When he went to Kyoto in 1791 (Kansei 3), he worked with Maruyama Okyo and made a major change in his style of painting from Nanpin-style to Maruyama-style. In 1807 (Bunka 4), the Matsumae clan was transferred to Yanagawa in Mutsu Province (Fukushima Prefecture), and Namikyo, who was his elder retainer, worked hard to recover his territory, which he managed to achieve in 1821 (Bunsei 4). During this period, he produced works energetically to raise funds. Although he produced some mediocre works, he also produced many excellent works, such as "Shaka Nehanzu" (1811, owned by Koryu-ji Temple in Hakodate) and "Famous Hawk" (1815, owned by the Menuma family). His representative work is "Zocho Retsuzo" (Portrait of Eiji Chieftains), which he painted in 1792 when he was 27 years old and depicts an Ainu chieftain (owned by the Besançon Municipal Museum of Fine Arts). <References> Nakamura Shinichiro, "The Life of Kakizaki Hakyo," Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido, "Kakizaki Hakyo and His Era Exhibition/Catalogue," Hakyoronshu Publishing Association, edited by Hakyoronshu
