The former name of the Matsumae clan, feudal lords of the Matsumae domain. After the late Kamakura period, small clans that had been defeated in the wars of Oshu and Uzen crossed over to Ezo, which was under the control of the Tsugaru Ando clan, and built manors on the southern coast of Hokkaido, where they fought among themselves. Among them, Takeda Nobuhiro, a guest commander of Kakizaki Sueshige, lord of Hanazawa manor in Kaminokuni, strengthened his power by making an effort to suppress the Battle of Koshamain in 1457 (Choroku 1), and became an adopted son of the Kakizaki clan, unifying the other manor lords. Then, during the time of the second lord, Mitsuhiro, in 1514 (Eisho 11), he moved from Kaminokuni to Odate (Matsumae Town) and obtained the position of deputy governor of the Ando clan, establishing his position as the local ruler of Ezo. The Kakizaki surname continued until the fourth generation, Suehiro, but in 1593 (Bunroku 2), the fifth generation, Yoshihiro, received a red seal letter from Toyotomi Hideyoshi officially recognizing his rule over Ezo, and left his position as deputy governor of the Ando clan. In 1599 (Keicho 4), he changed his surname to Matsumae, and in 1604 (Keicho 9), he was officially granted exclusive rights to trade with Ezo by Tokugawa Ieyasu, becoming the first lord of the Matsumae domain.
