A common name for the larvae of mainly flies in the order Diptera of the class Insecta. Fly larvae are usually headless, milky white, and highly elastic. They infest animal droppings, corpses, septic tanks, rotting matter, and garbage dumps, and are important pests from a sanitary perspective; in the past they infested open wounds on people, causing myiasis. The maggots known as sashi and used as fishing bait are mainly the larvae of blowflies. Sashi was a traditional name for small flies such as fruit flies, but has been used as another name for maggots since the Edo period. Onaga maggots, which infest septic tanks and sewers, have a long, thin tail and are the larvae of hoverflies.
