[Japanese Astronomical Observatories]
Tokyo Astronomical Observatory is currently one of the research institutes attached to the University of Tokyo, and is a representative observatory in Japan with observatories all over the country. It was established in 1878 on the Hongo campus as an observatory for the Faculty of Science of the University of Tokyo. In 1888, the astronomy-related operations of the former Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of the Navy were integrated to form Tokyo Astronomical Observatory in Iikura, Azabu, and in 1924 it moved to Mitaka, where it remains today.
