This type of earthenware has a tile-like texture and was found mainly in the Kinki region from the Heian to Muromachi periods. It is made from fine clay and smoked to absorb carbon, giving the surface a black color and the interior a grayish-white color, with both the inside and outside polished to adjust. The majority of the vessels are bowls, but there are also small bowls and plates. Until now, they have been thought to have been hand-kneaded, but there is also a theory that they were made using inner molds. As excavations of medieval ruins progress, it has become clear that these vessels have also been unearthed from as far west as the Setouchi and Kyushu, and as far east as Kamakura.
