Bed sheet - Shikifu

Also called sheets, this is a general term for fabrics that are laid on futons and bed mattresses to prevent them from getting dirty. Fabrics that are moisture-absorbent, heat-retaining, and durable against friction and washing are recommended. Generally, white cotton fabrics are used, but in recent years, fabrics made from a blend of cotton and a small percentage of synthetic fibers have also been used. The most common weave is honeycomb weave, but plain weaves such as calico and bleached jersey are also used. Other fabrics that are used include toweling and shrunken fabrics for summer, and soft synthetic fabrics and brushed cotton fabrics for winter. They are also becoming more colorful, with pink, blue, green, cream, and other colors available on the market. The dimensions of the sheet should be large enough to fold over the futon and encase it on all four sides. According to the JIS standard, sheets for futons should be 130 cm wide and 227-250 cm long. Single beds come in widths of 155 and 185 cm and lengths of 250 and 279 cm, while double beds come in widths of 229 and 240 cm and lengths of 250 and 279 cm. There are also semi-double beds with intermediate sizes. In the summer, some regions use a type of flower mat called a negoza, which provides a cool feeling and helps people sleep better. For hygienic reasons, bed sheets should be washed regularly and kept clean.

シーツともいい、敷ぶとん、ベッドのマットレスなどの上に敷いて汚れを防ぐための布類の総称。吸湿性と保温性があり、摩擦と洗濯に対する耐久性のある布地がよい。一般に白地の綿織物を用いるが、近年は木綿と低率に合成繊維を混紡した布地も用いられている。織り組織は蜂巣(はちす)織（枡(ます)織）が主であるが、キャラコ、晒天竺(さらしてんじく)などの平織も用いられる。ほかに夏向きにはタオル地や縮(ちぢみ)風のもの、冬向きに化合繊、木綿を起毛した感触の柔らかいものが用いられるようになった。また色もカラフルになり、ピンク、ブルー、グリーン、クリームなどのものが市販されている。敷布の寸法は、敷ぶとんを覆って四方を包み込むように折り曲げられる大きさを必要とする。JIS(ジス)規格では、敷ぶとん用は幅が130センチメートル、丈は227～250センチメートル。ベッド用シングルの場合は幅155、185センチメートル、丈250、279センチメートル、ダブル用は幅229、240センチメートル、丈250、279センチメートルとなっている。またセミダブル用としてこの中間のものがある。夏は冷感を与え、よく就寝できるように、寝茣蓙(ねござ)という花莚(はなむしろ)を用いる地方もある。敷布は衛生上つねに洗濯をして、清潔を保つことが必要である。
