An insect of the family Mecoptera and family Acanthidae. It is so named because it resembles a crane fly with its long, slender body and legs, long wings, and the way it flies. Its head is long and beak-like with a small chewing opening at the tip, and it is very similar to a crane fly, but the abdomen of the male cannot bend dorsally and the claws at the end of the abdomen are degenerate. Each leg is longer than the body and has a single large claw at the end. It grasps objects by folding the claws. It is pale brown in color, has a forewing length of about 20 mm, and is found only in the Kanto region. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
