Boxing Day

...As a result, the attitude of nonconformists softened, and the British people began to celebrate a new Christmas. In response to this trend, the shortened Christmas holiday was extended to Boxing Day (the day after Christmas, on which gifts are given to servants, postmen, etc.). This was extended not only to banks and government offices, but also to ordinary merchants and industrial workers by the end of the 19th century.
