An old town in Gunma County, occupying the southeastern slope of Mount Haruna in central Gunma Prefecture. Nishiakiya, the center of the town, developed as a castle town around Minowa Castle in the Middle Ages. In addition to rice, wheat and silk farming, the town is also famous for growing plums and other fruits. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Takasaki City along with Gunma Town and Kurabuchi Village in Gunma County and Shinmachi Town in Tano County. Area 43.76 km2 . Population 18,912 (2003). 群馬県中部,榛名(はるな)山南東斜面を占める群馬郡の旧町。中心の西明屋(にしあきや)は,中世の箕輪(みのわ)城の城下町として発達。米麦作,養蚕業のほかはウメなどの果樹栽培が盛ん。2006年1月群馬郡群馬町,倉渕村,多野郡新町町と高崎市へ編入。43.76km2。1万8912人(2003)。
